Next Generation cornered Rick Wickham, director of the Windows Games Business of Microsoft at E3, quizzing him about the future of gaming through Vista, the future of online gaming, Direct X 10 and paid microcontent updates. On the latter, Wickham said:

"Online is obviously a huge part of the story, and business models online are going to evolve and change over time. I don't think that the one-game monthly subscription model is going to be the only model that moves forward. You'll see the adoption of Asian business models, like digital objects and microtransaction-based games. I think you'll see larger publishers and developers aggregating content into services in a way that they haven't done in the past".

We know he's right, but the initial efforts at this sort of business model from companies like Bethesda have really jammed their cods down our craw. The subpar micrcontent being shoveled out over Live for two bucks a pop just feels so cynically produced and marketed. And we can't get over the feeling that eventually, it's all going to end with an industry that charges five bucks over Live Marketplace for the BFG.
